The only thing I have going on in the afternoon is a visit to a neurologist.

After running some tests and checking the results, he tells me, “Everything looks good so far, Alex. No games yet and no contact, but you can get back on the ice and skate if you’d like.”

“If I’d like?” I exclaim, blowing out a relieved breath. “Hell, Doc, this is amazing news. I feel fine, so getting back out on the ice means everything to me.”

“Then you’re all set. Just don’t overdo it,” he warns.

“I won’t.”

My doctor’s visit leaves me in a great mood, even when I stop at the market to pick up some essentials for tonight’s dinner and end up delayed by a couple of fans out in the parking lot.

It’s all good. They’re just excited to meet a Wolves player.

I graciously sign autographs and even let them take a few selfies, wholesome ones, of course.

Afterward, I get my shopping done and head back to the house.

Back at the apartment, I unpack the groceries and get started on my signature spaghetti sauce. It’s only two o’clock, but I like to brown the meat early to add to the sauce, put in my special seasonings, and allow it all to simmer for a few hours so that the flavors blend together.

Once the sauce is on the stovetop simmering, I make a caprese salad by slicing fresh mozzarella and plum tomatoes and alternating them with basil leaves on a big platter. After drizzling on a balsamic glaze, I slide the salad into the fridge to keep it cool.

“There.” I look around. “I think that’s it for now.”

Since I’m still wearing the same gray tech tee and black athletic pants from my doctor’s visit, I decide to change into an olive-green button-down shirt, dark-wash jeans, and casual but nice slip-on shoes.

The rest of the day flies by.

I keep an eye on the sauce, stirring it frequently. I also slice up some nice Italian bread to go with dinner. Finally, I set the table in the small alcove that’s attached to the kitchen.

When I see it’s close to five, I start the pasta, and then plop down on the sofa with my phone to get caught up on all the recent hockey news.

Hmm, looks like even though it’s early in the season, we may be getting a new backup goaltender. Our starting goalie, Ruslan Brezzenov, is really good, but he’s getting older. And our current second-string backup has the opposite problem—he’s too young. He needs to head back down to the minors for some seasoning.

Don’t even get me started on our number three. Let’s just say he’s been on six teams in the past five years.

So yeah, a new goaltender waiting in the wings would be a good thing.

But I guess we’ll see.

Setting my phone down on the coffee table, I notice my hoodie that Kelsi left. It’s draped over the back of the sofa on the side she slept on.

Leaning over and snatching it up, I hold it up to my nose and breathe in deeply.
